The historic Ram Mandir in Ayodhya marked its first anniversary on January 11, 2025, with grand celebrations that drew millions of devotees from across the country. The anniversary, known as Pratishtha Dwadashi, was celebrated in alignment with the Hindu lunar calendar, specifically on Paush Shukla Dwadashi, a date considered highly auspicious in Hindu tradition.
Why January 11 Instead of January 22?
The Pran Pratishtha (consecration) ceremony of the Ram Lalla idol took place on January 22, 2024, but the anniversary was celebrated on January 11, 2025, following the Hindu calendar. According to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, Hindu festivals and rituals are traditionally observed based on the Panchang (Hindu calendar). The consecration ceremony in 2024 occurred on Kurma Dwadashi, the 12th day of the waxing moon in the month of Paush. In 2025, this date fell on January 11, prompting the decision to celebrate the anniversary on this day.
Grand Celebrations in Ayodhya
The three-day celebrations, held from January 11 to 13, featured a series of religious rituals, cultural programs, and spiritual discourses. The events were designed to include devotees who were unable to attend the historic consecration ceremony in 2024.
Key highlights of the celebrations included:
Agnihotra and Mantra Recitations: The day began with Agnihotra rituals accompanied by mantras from the Shukla Yajurveda, performed twice—from 8 AM to 11 AM and 2 PM to 5 PM. This was followed by the chanting of 6 lakh Shri Ram Mantras, along with recitations of the Ram Raksha Stotra and Hanuman Chalisa.
Abhishek and Aarti: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath performed the Abhishek (ritual bathing) of the Ram Lalla idol, followed by a grand aarti at 12:20 PM. The deity was also offered 56 dishes as part of the rituals.
Cultural Programs: The temple complex hosted classical music performances, Ram Katha discourses, and cultural events. A large tent at Angad Teela accommodated up to 5,000 devotees, providing them with a rare opportunity to witness the festivities.
Prasad Distribution: Devotees were offered Shri Ram’s Prasad throughout the day, symbolizing blessings from Lord Ram.
Record-Breaking Devotee Turnout
Ayodhya witnessed a massive influx of devotees during the anniversary celebrations. Over 2 lakh pilgrims visited the temple on January 1, 2025, setting the tone for the grand festivities. The temple, which has already become one of India’s most visited pilgrimage sites, welcomed millions of devotees in its first year, surpassing even the Taj Mahal in terms of footfall.
A Symbol of Faith and Culture
The Ram Mandir stands as a testament to India’s rich cultural heritage and spiritual legacy. Its construction, following a decades-long legal and social struggle, has been hailed as a moment of unity and faith for millions of Hindus worldwide. The temple’s architecture, inspired by ancient Indian designs, reflects the grandeur of India’s past while serving as a beacon of hope for the future.
Looking Ahead
As the Ram Mandir enters its second year, plans are underway to further develop Ayodhya as a global spiritual and cultural hub. The temple trust has announced initiatives to enhance facilities for pilgrims, including better infrastructure, accommodation, and transportation. Additionally, efforts are being made to promote Ayodhya as a center for Vedic studies and cultural exchange.
The first anniversary of the Ram Mandir’s consecration was not just a celebration of faith but also a reaffirmation of India’s commitment to preserving its spiritual and cultural heritage. As millions continue to flock to Ayodhya, the Ram Mandir remains a symbol of unity, devotion, and timeless tradition.
